!±8± In Review: Dremel's 8300-01 Cordless Multi-Max Oscillating Multi-Tool

The Dremel Multi-Max high-performance multi-tool has fast become one of the most popular multi-tools in the business, and, in fact, one of the most searched for power tools of any kind on the market today. The tool has been something of a phenomenon, and now, having released the 8300-01, a cordless version of their Multi-Max oscillating multi-tool, Dremel is cutting new ground and slugging the power tool and crafting industries with yet another multi-tool that doesn't intend to share the spotlight.

Among many other things, the combination of affordability and high-performance in Dremel's multi-tools makes them some of the most universally useful and accommodating power tools ever engineered. With the 8300-01, Dremel has seamlessly built that universality into a conveniently cordless design that, accordingly, renders the thing more portable, maneuverable and versatile than ever before.

To get a little more technical, the 8300-01 oscillating multi-tool offers variable speeds (3,000 - 21,000 OPM) for a variety of working applications and the unparalleled versatility to confront any repair, remodeling, or restoration project one might possibly encounter. In fact, because the term multi-tool is never taken lightly in the production industries, and because Dremel is not a corner cutting manufacturer, the thing is designed to cut, grind, sand, scrape, remove grout, and everything in between.

Because the tool is also designed ergonomically for operator comfort and optimal controllability, the thing is simple for any user to operate and yields always amazing results. Additionally, with superior precision and clean performance, the tool is ideal for anyone from professional crafters and handymen to home-owners, hobbyists and do-it-yourself-ers. It's a truly universal power tool that allows professionals to use high-performance equipment at an affordable price, and allows the average homeowner to work with professional, high-end power tools.

With the ability to rough-up your rough projects and perform gently during more delicate applications, the tool is safe for all types of project and appropriate for all types of user. Because this Multi-Max also features a soft start mechanism and an electronic brake, you can trust its smooth movements and safe, smooth stops. The tool additionally offers a variable oscillating angle allowing the tool's head to pivot up to three degrees to the left or right. This variable angle allows you to get the tool into harder to reach or awkward areas with surprising ease, so, whether you're slicing through a maze of metal piping, or delicately finishing a restoration project, the cordless Multi-Max can get just about anywhere you need it to go.

The Dremel 8300-01 multi-tool kit additionally includes two 12v Max lithium-ion batteries (which boast a comparatively impressive run-time), a one-hour charger, a 3/4" wood flush-cut blade, 3" wood and drywall saw blade, a hook and loop pad, sandpaper in a variety of grits, and the always convenient storage case.

7 Mixed Oscillating All Purpose Multi-Function Saw Blades Kit.

Fits Dremel Multi-Max, Fein Multimaster, Bosch Multi-X, Chicago & Craftsman Multi-Tool

Set Includes:

1 x 3-1/8" Half Round HSS M42 Saw Blade

1 x 1-3/8" Japan Teeth Precision End-Cut Blade For Wood

1 x 1-11/16" Extra Wide Long Reach Universal Bi-Metal HSS M42 E-Cut Blade

1 x 1-3/8" Bi-Metal, HSS M42 End Cut Blade for Metal and other applications

1 - Stainless Steel Rigid Flush Cut Scraper Blade

1 - Triangular Carbide Finger Rasp

1 - Diamond Coated Segment Blade

For best results, put very little pressure on the material to be cut and move the tool rapidly from on side of the blade to the other side, this way you will be using the greater possible number of teeth.

When the tool is left stationary and big pressure is exerted on the blade, the few teeth that are used to cut do wear out quickly and the blade can become dull.

Craftsman 12 Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 09-17438 Review

!±8± Craftsman 12 Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool Model 09-17438 Review

I bought the Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool two months ago to test out and review.

Nextec Multi-Tool

I used the circular saw blade to trim a 1 X 6 out in the yard. I used the flush blade to cut the bottom of a door jamb so I could install tile in the bathroom. I used the carbide blade to clean out the grout so I could replace a 6 X 6 tile that I put in wrong. I used the scraper blade to remove some double sided tape so I could put in a new door weather seal. I used the sanding pad to sand a leg on an adirondack chair before I painted it. I used the rasp to change the angle on a chair leg brace.

I did all this without dragging out a cord, a sander, an angle grinder, a wood file, a putty knife, a circular saw or a hammer and chisel. I did all of these tasks easily and in a lot less time than it would normally take. I did all these tasks with just one tool!

There are a lot of similar multi-tools on the market. The Craftsman Multi-Tool is not the first and it is not the best, but it is the best value at only . And it's cordless! It is similar to the Bosch PS-50, Fein Multimaster, and Dremel Multi-Max. The Craftsman multi-tool is like the others and is even compatible with the Fein accessories but it's a lithium-ion cordless multi-tool for only (The Dremel Multi-Max is corded for ). And as a bonus, like the Fein Multimaster, it comes with an integrated dust bypass vacuum adapter so you can hook it up to your shop vac or dust collection system.

I don't consider the Craftsman Multi-tool as a heavy-duty tool. In fact the tool will get hot around the battery area if you use it on too large a task (3 to 4 batteries in a row.) It is just a great tool for those special small to medium jobs around the house that I have all the time. It is a great "around the house" tool. If you need a tool like this to work for you all day long or have a large project like scraping an entire house before painting you really should buy a heavier tool like the Fein Multi-Master.

NEXTEC Multi-Tool Features:

The Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool comes in a handy carrying case along with a 30 minute quick charger and six attachments. The Multi-Tool is powered by a 12-volt Lithium-Ion battery.

Some of the key features of this tool are:

15000 OPM/ 2.8 oscillation angle
LED work light
includes 6 accessories (blades and sanders)
Soft-grip Handle
Compact Ergonomic design
Integrated dust bypass with vacuum adapter
Powerful, compact motor
Secure accessory mount
Powered by 12 Volt Lithium-Ion battery
30-minute quick charger with LED charge indicator:

Quickly charges the battery and features a charge indicator that visually indicates the charging status.

Compact ergonomic design: ultra compact for use in tight spaces Lithium-Ion Power: Lighter weight, better performance and longer shelf life.

Weight: 1.8 lbs with battery Accessories I recommend buying an extra battery.

If you already own an Craftsman Auto Hammer or any of the NEXTEC Line you already have a spare. You can order spare battery and blades through ToolBoxHero (see link below)

Final Thoughts:

The Craftsman 12-Volt NEXTEC Multi-Tool performed very well when using it the way it's meant to be used. This tool is not a replacement for the heavy-duty plug in versions like the Fein Multimaster. It is a great cordless multi-tool that will work very well around the house. The price really makes the Craftsman Multi-Tool shine!

Finding the Right Multi Tool Blades

!±8± Finding the Right Multi Tool Blades

Multi tools are basically designed to work in tight spaces to allow for quick repair of objects. Undoubtedly, the most popular among multi tools, is the Swiss army knife. These are multiple tools that are incorporated in a small and compact knife and are small enough to fit into your pocket. Typical tools in a multi tool include a knife, scissors, screw driver, pliers, small saw, can opener, reamer etc. Among recent manufacturers include Fein Multimaster, Dremel Multimax and Bosch. Some brands like Leatherman have been retooled to feature large knives, strong pliers, wire cutters, and locking blades and include tools like hard wire cutters, serrated knives, diamond coated file, large and small bit driver, lanyard attachment, and wire stripper.

These instruments function by working back and forth of the tools blades. Thus the tool is safe and much-in control making them appropriate for every trade. The instrument can be used for different uses besides being used as a cutter.

There are several blade types and make sure you are looking for the right one. These blades range extensively in power, speed and functions. You could either choose from a high power, high speed or less powerful but portable styles. Among the common blade types include course toothed- that are generally employed for cutting green wood, hack saw- that's generally applied to cut metal, knife-that can cute everything right from leather, rubber, cloth and linoleum and fine toothed-that cuts wood, and plastic.

When buying blades, for your tools, make sure the blade pattern fits all makes and models of multi oscillating tools on the market. There are some manufacturers like FitzAll multi tool blades that have a unique arbor pattern that let you position the blade 8 ways. This is different from the general trend where most manufacturers make blades that let you position them 4 ways. These blades aren't effective when you need to position your blade at a 45 Degree angle on your tool.

As earlier said, these multi tools are great for cutting, scraping, sanding, grinding and polishing in areas where other large tools do not fit. Every multi tool works well as long as there are helped by the right blades and the right accessory. While every manufacturer has different and special blade for his tool, manufacturers like FitzAll, make blades to suit every tool.

And for those looking to buy oscillating blades, make sure to buy one that offers accuracy, can be used for an extended range of applications and can cut many materials with a reduced vacuum.
